To tithe is more than merely surrendering the tenth of your earnings to the kingdom of God, in other words, your church, expecting to reap blessings. Tithing in the Bible is a matter of the heart.
2 Corinthians 9:7, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver”
God is interested in the intentions behind your tithing. He desires that your generosity flows from a willing heart, not one that feels obligated or pressured. God loves a cheerful giver, the scriptures state. So, the question you must ask yourself is, how do I feel about tithing? When you ask yourself this question in prayer, you’ll have insight as to your perspective on giving that which you earn for a cause that deviates from fulfilling a personal need. Now is the time to monitor your heart.
Abolish Greed: Greed isn’t Godly
Money represents opportunities. Why? Because when you have money, more options become available to you. Unfortunately, money is an attractive disposition of the heart, and when it the accumulation of wealth takes over, you position yourself at odds with God and His righteousness.
Hebrews 13:5, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
A way to abolish greed is to give and live a God-centered life, where the needs of others are considered, not disregarded. How do you practice living a God-centered lifestyle? By being concerned about the needs of others. Look within your circle of friends, family, and your community. There are always people in need of help, and often, the form of support that is needed is in the area of finances.
Practice the art of giving those closest to you. If you are not ready to provide financial support, then help bring someone a meal or help someone in any way they may need, big or small. The more you give of yourself and serve others, the more you abolish greed from your heart. Be practical and remove the power of greed over your life by giving.
Giving is Ministry: Serve Others
2 Corinthians 9:12-13 (NLT), “For the administration of this service not only supplieth the want of the saints but is abundant also by many thanksgivings unto God;
For your generosity to them and to all believers will prove that you are obedient to the Good News of Christ. Whiles by the experiment of this ministration they glorify God for your professed subjection unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution unto them, and unto all men;”
Tithing in the Bible is a part of the ministry, and it’s a way of serving others. When we tithe, we’re helping, and our help meets the needs of others. And we are walking in the ministry of giving generously God is generous to provide all that we need, and He increases our resources to continue and bless others. To give is to serve the people around us, so challenge yourself and help someone in need today. Ask yourself, what needs can I fulfill? What can I give? Begin giving your time at church. Think baby steps.
Principle and Promise
Proverbs 3: 9-10, “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”
Biblical tithing means bringing your first earnings. What does this mean? It means to deliver the first portion of your earnings, the firstfruits. Tithing is a way of planting. There is a promise from God when you move in the spirit of generosity. This is not only a promise from God; it’s a kingdom principle of sowing and reaping, and when you execute on a kingdom principle, the results are guaranteed. How do you sow and give of your first fruits? Think outside the box. Look for a cause that moves your heart and think about giving and donating a portion of your income in terms of planting seeds. Start sowing into organizations that cause you not to look at how many seeds you’re planting or what will be your harvest, but rather the quality of your seeds and how those seeds will help improve someone else’s life.
